(Wow, has it been four months already?)
Okay, so, today Michael Steele won -- rightly -- the Chairmanship of the RNC. Amazingly, it only took the RNC's voting members about a bazillion rounds of balloting before electing Mr. Steele, so hey . . . progress, right?
I fully expect that some of my friends on the Left will diminish this accomplishment, arguing that those of us in the GOP felt we could only wage any serious battles against the Obama Administration and Congressional Democrats if we, too, chose an African-American. First, Mr. Steele sure didn't win the Chair in a walkoff. If most of the folks voting today had actually wanted him as their leader, not only would they have elected him on the first round, but I bet more of them would also know the words to "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted." *
Second, have you heard this guy?!? He spoke at a lunch I attended last June, and swear to God, it was the first time in about a year and a half that I felt positive about my party. He knew full well the spanking we were going to receive at the ballot box in November, from the Presidential race on down, but he was already looking beyond it. He was talking about the inroads into the demographics of working-class and minority Americans that the GOP should be making -- should have been making for years, as a matter of fact. But when he talked about it, it wasn't because he saw it as our way to win -- it was because he saw it as right, as something about which we should be caring. When I got home that evening, I told my wife that I would follow this guy anywhere. And now, I'm proud to say that I am.
Look closely at this picture, Rahm. Because he's comin' . . . and Hell's comin' with him.
*Editor's note: I wouldn't be surprised, however, if the dream of many of those voting in the RNC elections today is, in fact, to own a fly casino, like Bugsy Siegel.
